Good evening fine people!!
We are currently grounded due to 'other stuff' and getting rather frustrated about not being able to get out in the van  so.....we're trying to kit it out with all the bits we need so the next availbale opportunity - 5/6th July and counting - we can just get in and go!!!!
So on the subject of awnings what do you think of this? and what do you recommend?
Cheers
Mike & Sue

ok if you want to live on a campsite .other than that it takes up room and if wet stinks .
i say save the money . if you want shade turn the van round .
shade on the north side .sun on the south side .
unless you live down under .

Cheaper than a 'Windblocker' but looks as though it would take some time to set up and peg out and likewise when taking down. However, it depends on when and where you want to use it. If you intend to park up for a few days it could be very effective, would give you somewhere to keep those muddy boots/shoes and wet coats instead of in the van :thumb: I have seen these on vans and they look okay so if it suits your way of travelling then why not ;)

I understand what Alan & coola are saying regarding site stays, but we've got a while to go yet before we can full-time properly so we're still going to be using sites together with wielding on & off still getting into the rhythm of everything.

We thought it would be nice to be able to be outside & out of any wind when we do go to the dark side now & again! ;)

yes i tried them years ago . but they do take up room . plus i got caught in a storm just before i had to move . wet tent isnt a nice product to have hanging around .
but try it . every one has different views thats what makes the world turn .
i even had one on my van for africa . but wasnt that good at shading . it shaded the van not us . thats when i learnt go around other side of van works best. sun is rarely up above .usually coming from the side .unless you hang around the equator. save your money put it towards a holiday i say.

Awnings, that wonder of the campsite that has no place in civilised society!
As alan says, they reek when wet and you have to travel with that scent!
As Les Pelmetten say, it don't look like it would withstand a casual 'puff' of breeze!
And as Coola says, he's never used it!
There are tons of bits you can get that will be far more useful than an awning!
If it's sunny then cook outside and enjoy the sun.
If it's raining, then cook inside and enjoy the shelter.
If it's neither, then just remind yourself how great you are that you decided to choose this way of life!
Awnings schmawnings!

Oh! Do come on you lot, they smell when they get wet, you have to travel with that smell, they take up too much space, what century are you people living in ? Let's start with fabric, in Alan' years ago comment they were probably made of thick canvas, these days they are breathable nylon. Space !! These days they roll up into small portable carry bags, weight, they are lightweight, smell, not if you get them aired as soon as possible and most motor homes have external lockers. You either like awnings or you don't it's as simple a choice as that really !

none of us know when things are going to go wrong . i know a few different people in different countries . help is often not far away . or verbal help can help you keep the wheels turning . maybe slowly . but to safety and a better repair .

Have a look at www.lillypadleisure.co.uk .............as an alternative, i am assuming you have an awning fitted.

If you haven't, then don't.

The Kyham range are also another option, very well made and long lasting.:)

Hi,
We have an awning, only use it when standing for a while but wouldnt be without it.What we did is take the aluminium awning rails from an old caravan, they have a round hole for the length and the awning has a round plastic cord sewn in which slides in the ally. We fitted the ally stripe to both sides of the truck so we can have the awning left or right. It is 4.60 meters long and 4.60 meters deep but has straps so you can make it 2.50 meters out and roll up the rest when you only need it or if it is raining we let the rest hang down to the ground. <Fixed with poles and pegs. Problem we see with most awnings they are either too high or not wide enough. So regardless from where the sun or rain comes there is only a small protected place to sit. Ours was originally sailcloth which was a waste of space and crap, now we have a synthetic , dries in minutes.
